How Can the CDC Ignore Morgellons

Morgellons Disease has infected millions of sufferers and the Center for Disease Control has done little to nothing to investigate the disease. Morgellons is a disease that makes the patient feel like bugs are crawling all over their skin and cause itching and scratching all of the time. Not only are the symptoms uncomfortable, they are also unsightly. The disease causes lesions and sore to appear on all parts of the body. The lesions are not only unpleasant to look at but there are also fibrous materials that look like thread or a spider web is seen protruding from and within the sores.

The CDC has not taken this disease to seriously because most of the medical community refuses to recognize Morgellons. Some contend that it is a manifestation of a mental illness, while others refuse to identify it until more research is being done. It seems that San Antonia News Express reported that the CDC has formed a task force to study the phenomena. It was quickly discredited when a blogger stated that there was no information on the CDC website about the Morgellon taskforce and the author even discounted the news agencies credibility. The author also ranted about the Morgellon sufferers needing mental health help, not medical.

The Seattle Intelligence, a large newspaper in Washington gave more credible information. They wrote that Dan Rutz, the spokesperson for the CDC did not admit or deny that Morgellon existed, but said the CDC was setting up the task force to debunk the existence or non-existence of Morgellons Disease. Since there is so much hype about Morgellons in the media, the CDC wants to make sure that the disease is real. The article even talks about Morgellons Disease being made up to promote a horror movie. Not only does the hype cause speculation, there are many conspiracy theorists who are making wild allegations about government cover ups and bioterrorism.

San Francisco television station KTVU, reported that the CDC has asked Kaiser Permanente to conduct an epidermis study in the Bay Area. This area was picked because out of thousands of reported claims to cases, California has twenty four percent of those populations. The CDC feels that even though there is no formal diagnosis, there is enough concern to merit an investigation. With the symptoms being so unpleasant in nature, the CDC would do good to either recognize the disease or to reject the notion completely and refer the condition to the psychological community.

Whether the Morgellons Disease is real or not, the fact that people believe it and can show physical symptoms of it is enough for other health agencies besides the CDC to investigate. It is amazing in that in our day of advanced medicine the medical community cannot be at least curious about the disease or the symptoms that are being manifested. It is the moral responsibility of all medical agencies to investigate any claim that might be detrimental to the public’s safety. Time and more research will tell.
